The basketball players of Anadolu Efes Istanbul claimed the Euroleague championship for the second time in a row. In the final in Belgrade, they defeated Real Madrid 58:57. A year ago in Cologne, they were better than FC Barcelona (86:81).

The last club to defend the trophy was Olympiakos Piraeus (2012 and 2013). Anadolu are the second Turkish club to win the competition (in 2017, the best club team in Europe was Fenerbahce Istanbul).

The most successful team – with 10 championships – is Real Madrid.

Euroleague: Anadolu Efes defended the title. Basketball players from Istanbul better than Real Madrid in the final

The best player of the final was, as last year, Serbian Vasilije Micić.

The final meeting was a display of defensive, tough, relentless basketball in which it was very difficult for the players of both teams to score points. The final score was one of the four lowest in the final championship competition: in 1993, CSP Limoges beat Benetton Treviso 59:55 in Piraeus, a year later in Tel Aviv Joventut Badalona won against Olympiakos Piraeus 59:57, and in 1998. Kinder Bologna were victorious over Barcelona AEK Athens 58:44.

For three quarters, the ‘Königs’, the most successful team of the competition (10 championships), had the upper hand and led 12:6 in the first quarter, 31:26 in the second and 40:33 in the third having key players in centre Walter Tavares from Cape Verde and Frenchman Vincent Poirier.

With 33 seconds before the end of this part, the Anadolu basketball players reduced the loss to two points at 42:40, in which the biggest credit goes to German Tibor Pleiss, who scored only two points in the first half and as many as 15 in the second. In the fourth quarter, Micic’s throws from distance, the defensive work of 32-year-old American Chris Singleton, Marcin Gortat’s teammate from the Washington Wizards, and Pleiss’ actions in both defence and attack, gave a minimal advantage to the defending champion of the trophy.

It was the Spaniards who had to “chase” their rivals more often and they did not feel comfortable in this swap of roles. In the 35th minute, after a throw-in by the experienced Sergio Llull, Real led minimally at 50:49. Four points in a row by Pleiss made it Anadolu win 53:50. Madrid’s Argentinian Gabriel Deck led to a draw with a throw-in from behind the 6.75m line when the clock showed 2.37 minutes to go in the fourth quarter. The response from the rivals was instantaneous, with another three points added to his, and Efesu’s account by Micić.

With 44 seconds before the final buzzer, Llull scored two points with an alley-oop and Real were trailing only 57:58. The Turkish players constructed three times the attacking action interrupted by fouls by the Spaniards. However, they, and their coaches, forgot that time was running out…. Finally, the final buzzer sounded and the Turkish players put their hands up in a gesture of victory.

Micić scored 23 points (including 4 of 7 shots from behind the 6.75m line), two rebounds and two assists, while Pleiss had 19 points and seven rebounds and two blocks. The German scored an efficiency index of 24 and the Serb had 22.

Both teams had poor three-point shooting efficiency, with Anadolu’s players hitting six of 24 shots and Real’s six of 33. The Turks had the advantage in two-point actions – 53 per cent, against 41 of their rivals.
