Bristol City emphatically beat Southampton 3-1 at Ashton Gate, ending Russell Martin’s team’s 25-match unbeaten streak.

Sam Bell, Rob Dickie and Harry Cornick scored three goals to help City beat the Saints in a match in which the Robins had no mercy.

Liam Manning’s team started the game well, firing three shots from inside the penalty area in the first 10 minutes, but Southampton dominated possession of the ball, finding no real chances apart from Sam Edozie’s shot which deflected off the top of the crossbar.

City were almost caught out at the start of the second period when Edozie fired a shot across goal which Brooks slipped in to try and touch but couldn’t reach it.

The Robins opened the scoring in the 53rd minute when Bell scored after a pass from Anis Mehmeti, who brilliantly beat Ryan Manning and headed the ball low to the winger.

The second goal came after Dickie headed in following a Joe Williams cross from a corner kick which Saints failed to defend and Cornick added the icing on the cake eight minutes before the end when he swept home a precise low ball from Ross McCrorie after a counter-attack.
