I arrived at Ashton Gate on Saturday, March 21st at 3:00 PM, watching another match, and we saw a poor performance from the entire Bristol City team. It was as if they sensed they wouldn’t win today; they had no energy or will to fight. I was right. It’s difficult to capture the scale of the performance we saw against West Brom. Chaotic, lethargic, lacking belief. All these words fit, but they still don’t capture how poorly City performed in a 1-0 defeat that seemed much more severe than the scoreline suggested.
There was a lot going on at the start; everyone was certainly expecting a home win, and the recent draw, in particular, didn’t bring much satisfaction to the fans or the team, and the away game on March 10th was especially disappointing, especially since they lost 2-0 to Leicester City.
This match lacked fight and intensity, but we all understand there are problems. Bristol City, having to cope without many defensive players, are only one win in eight matches after this recent disappointing result, and the home fans expressed their dissatisfaction with whistles and boos before the end.
26′ Goal! Bristol City 0, West Bromwich Albion 1. George Campbell (West Bromwich Albion) heads home from very close range. Assisted by Callum Styles after a cross from a corner.
29′ The attempt is blocked. Emil Riis (Bristol City) heads in from the left side of the penalty area, but it’s blocked. Assisted by Tomi Horvat after a cross.
They also created the first significant opportunity of the second half when Bird and Emil Riis created a chance for McCrorie, who had lost Styles’ attention, but whose dangerous attack was saved by Josh Griffiths in the visiting goal.
32′ Saved attempt. Aune Heggebø’s (West Bromwich Albion) right-footed shot from inside the penalty area was saved by Radek Vítek (Bristol City) in the middle of the net. Assisted by Jed Wallace.
West Brom threatened to break the deadlock in the opening five minutes. Josh Maja received the ball when Ross McCrorie lost it in his own half, but after slipping past Jason Knight, the striker failed to get a clear shot under pressure from Adam Randell.
49′ Attempt blocked. Aune Heggebø’s (West Bromwich Albion) header from the center of the box was blocked. Assisted by Nathaniel Phillips with a headed pass.
The Baggies, however, opened the scoring on the half-hour mark when Campbell rose highest to reach Callum Styles’ corner and scored his fourth Championship goal of the season, despite the efforts of Robins captain Knight.
70′ Attempt blocked. Daryl Dike’s (West Bromwich Albion) right-footed shot from distance was blocked. Assisted by Jayson Molumby.
71′ Foul by Jayson Molumby (West Bromwich Albion).
71′ Sinclair Armstrong (Bristol City) wins a free-kick in the defending half.
72′ Attempt saved. Isaac Price’s (West Bromwich Albion) right-footed shot from inside the penalty area was saved in the top left corner by Radek Vítek (Bristol City).
Although the score remained uncertain, Bristol City remained in the game. When Armstrong’s low cross evaded substitute Delano Burgzorg, Griffiths had to intervene to prevent his teammate Styles from heading the ball into his own net.
George Campbell scored the only goal as West Bromwich Albion defeated Bristol City and secured their second consecutive Championship relegation victory.
Campbell scored in the 26th minute with a header from a first-half corner at Ashton Gate, which proved to be the only goal of the afternoon. Albion moved four points clear of the relegation zone with their first away win in the league since October 2025.
Albion reached the final in relative comfort, meaning they had won two consecutive league matches for the first time since the opening weekend of the season.
When the final whistle blew, there was a barrage of boos and whistles. Campbell scored what turned out to be the only goal of the afternoon. Albion moved four points clear of the relegation zone with their first away league win since October 2025.
