Roy Hodgson has returned to Bristol City after 44 years, at the age of 78, after taking over as manager of the club for the first time following the sacking of Gerhard Struber. 44 years ago, Roy Hodgson’s first job at Bristol City Robins was as assistant manager to Bob Houghton from 1980 to 1982, and then, from January to April 1982, he was manager.
His career has spanned many places and clubs, including: Inter Milan, Liverpool, Fulham, and the England national team, Roy Hodgson, will manage the first team until the end of the 2026 season in Bristol. The 78-year-old will meet with the Robins players and staff on Monday, before their away match against Charlton Athletic on Good Friday. This is a return to the club he managed in 1982 and his first job since leaving Crystal Palace in 2024. Roy Hodgson took two years off and was on holiday, but he missed this job as a manager, this challenge every day and winning matches because everyone misses that and wants something more to do in the history of football to make a mark.
He certainly can’t write off the best in history. Coach Gerhard Struber can’t write off. When he started at the club, there was initially an idea, a plan, and enthusiasm. There was a moment when Bristol City was in the top six teams in the league, but they failed to maintain their position and win every match, and for this reason he was sacked after a series of defeats. What he achieved here was only 51 points with the team, including 14 wins, 9 draws, and 16 losses to the Robins. As a result, they fell dramatically from the play-off places and finished 16th out of 24 teams in the Sky Bet Championship, now so close to the relegation zone. With seven matches remaining, manager Roy Hodgson steps in. We’ll see what the future holds and whether they can play better and stay in the league.
This coming weekend, the Robins, 16th in the table, play away to Charlton Athletic, who are in 18th place. Soon, on Monday, April 6, at 3 p.m. at Ahston Gates, they will host the team from the north, Sheffield United F.C., which is currently 17th in the table. So all these matches are very important not to sleep, just to get an equal 6 points.
