The rules for organizing the 2026 All-Star Game have been announced. Fans of the world’s best basketball league can expect major changes.

The NBA and the players’ association presented the game format to the league’s competition committee. The response was positive, but the project still requires final approval.

The format of the 2026 NBA All-Star Game will be a round-robin tournament with three eight-player teams. Two will be composed entirely of American players, and the third will consist of international players – NBA news

New NBA All-Star Game Format

This year’s NBA All-Star Game will be a tournament format. The players will be divided into three teams – two teams composed of American players, and one team of international players (the so-called World Team). They will play in a round-robin tournament consisting of four 12-minute games. Each of the three teams will have at least eight players, for a total of 24.

If voting for the All-Star Game does not result in 16 U.S. and eight international players, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver will select additional All-Stars for one of these groups to achieve this minimum. The rule regarding the World Team player is quite flexible, as it can also be an American with ties to another country.

The tournament will be played in a round-robin format, followed by the final:

Game 1: Team A vs. Team B.

Game 2: Winner of Game 1 vs. Team C.

Game 3: Loser of Game 1 vs. Team C.

Game 4 (Final): The top two teams from the group stage will play for the title of All-Star Game 2026.

Each of the four games will be 12 minutes long.

In the event of a tie after the group stage, the final will be decided by point difference.

As I watched, the results of the 2026 NBA All-Star Game starting fives were announced on January 19th. The five players selected as starters in each conference were selected by votes from fans (50% of the votes), current NBA players (25%), and media (25%). The starting five players were the five players with the highest scores in each conference. The formula for a player’s score is: (fan vote position * 2 + player vote position + media vote position) / 4.

In the case of players in the same conference with identical scores, the number of fan votes was the deciding factor.

After all the votes were tallied, the players were ranked in each conference within each of the three voting groups. Each player’s score was calculated as the average of their position in the fan, player, and media votes.

This year, fans were no longer required to select players at their respective positions. Previously, they had to select a center, two forwards, and two guards. Then, due to less competition at the center position, the rules were changed, and voting was held for three centers (center and wing) and two perimeter players. This year, the NBA decided to abandon the positional division, and fans simply chose their five favorite players.

We also have the starting five for the NBA All-Star Game, which looks something like this:

Jaylen Brown, Boston Celtics

Jalen Brunson, New York Knicks

Cade Cunningham, Detroit Pistons

Luka Dončić, Los Angeles Lakers

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Oklahoma City Thunder
